Was Flame virus that invaded Iran's computer networks made in USA?

By Robert WindremNBC News

As the United Nations and Iran warn that the newly discovered Flame computer virus may be the most potent weapon of its kind, U.S. computer security experts tell NBC News that the virus bears the hallmarks of a U.S. cyber espionage operation, specifically that of the super-secret National Security Agency.

The Flame virus, which is intended to gather intelligence -- not destroy equipment or data, as was the case with the notorious Stuxnet virus -- is too sophisticated to be the work of another country, said one U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. ?It was U.S.,? said the official, who acknowledged having no first-hand knowledge of how the virus operates or was introduced into the Iranian computers.

The U.S. was also believed to have a hand in the creation and insertion of the Stuxnet virus, which targeted Iran?s uranium-enriching centrifuges.

The newly discovered Flame virus essentially ?colonizes? the targeted computers, giving hackers control over critical data stored on them, according to cybersecurity experts who spoke with NBC News.

?

U.S. intelligence officials declined to discuss the virus. ?We have no comment,? said one. ?Israeli officials, suspected in previous attacks, denied involvement.

The virus was first discovered and announced over the weekend by a Russian cybersecurity organization after reports of massive data losses in Iranian government computers.? Kaspersky Lab told Reuters it found the Flame infection after the International Telecommunications Union asked it to investigate. By some accounts, the virus has been operating in the wild for as long as five years.

"This is the most serious (cyber) warning we have ever put out," Marco Obiso, cybersecurity coordinator for the U.N.'s Geneva-based ITU, told Reuters on Tuesday, referring to a bulletin about the virus expected to be issued in the next few days.

The confidential warning will tell member nations that the Flame virus is a dangerous espionage tool that could potentially be used to attack critical infrastructure, Obiso said.

Other experts said the virus appears to be a different type of invader than Stuxnet.

"From reading press reports, this appears to be penetrating networks to surveil, as opposed to destroy, as was the case with Stuxnet,? said Michael Leiter, former director of the National Counter Terrorism Center and now an NBC News analyst. ?Such computer network operations are core components of what our and other intelligence services do day in and day out.

?Our intelligence services know that any weakness in an information system can mean the entire system is vulnerable. ?This makes defense very, very hard.? Network defenses must work reliably and in real time across the entire network to defend against persistent intruders."

Iran?s cybersecurity officials seem to agree.? The New York Times reported Iran?s Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center issued a warning Tuesday, saying, ?This malware is a platform which is capable of receiving and installing various modules for different goals.?

If this is indeed a U.S. cyberwarfare operation, said computer security expert Roger Cressey, the target is likely to be Iran?s nuclear program and its decision-making apparatus.?

"Whoever has developed this is engaged in very sophisticated intelligence gathering on computer networks throughout the region.? Clearly, Iran is a top priority for this program," said Cressey, former chief of staff of ?the President?s Critical Infrastructure Protection Board under George W. Bush and now an NBC News analyst.

Two years ago, the U.S. and Israel were suspected of inserting the Stuxnet virus into the Iranian centrifuge center at Natanz.?When the control software was corrupted, the motors that control the uranium centrifuge operations didn?t operate correctly, wobbling instead of spinning the way they?re supposed to, U.S. officials say.

Iran?s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said that the work of Kaspersky Labs helped Iran uncover the infection and remove it from the centrifuge control program.? Cybersecurity officials have told NBC News that the infection, while heavily publicized, was not as effective in disrupting Iran?s nuclear program as has been portrayed in some media accounts.

But Stuxnet is an example, said one U.S. official, of how those aiming to slow the Iranian nuclear program, which the U.S. says is aimed at producing nuclear weaponry, can have an effect similar to that of economic sanctions. The Iran program keeps making progress, he said, but never quite gets there.

Other U.S. officials said that the viruses not only affect the targeted program; they also make Iranian officials ?paranoid.? Additionally, countering the attacks diverts valuable assets and resources from the core mission, they said.?

While the Flame virus appears to be aimed more at gathering intelligence on the Iranian program, it, too, aims to make the Iranians paranoid, the officials said. It does so?by making them wonder about security and by raising questions about whether ?the enemy knows the intricacies of Iranian decision making, not just on the nuclear program but on a host of other issues important to the U.S. and the West, they said.

Danielle Wiener-Bronner: 'Why Do People Hate Jews?' Is Not the Right Question

Henry Blodget raised the eyebrows of Jew and Gentile alike yesterday with an article published in Business Insider, originally titled "Why Do People Hate Jews?" This was quickly changed to "Why Do Some People Hate Jews," and then to "Why Are the Sources of Anti-Semitism," and finally to "What Are the Sources of Anti-Semitism?" (Presumably the third title was a mistake.)

In his article, Blodget invited readers to join him in thinking upon why so many people profess to hate Jews. "Why? What is the source of this animosity? Why does it perpetuate itself? Where did this prejudice come from?" Lest we think that these questions were asked in jest, he immediately clarified that he was "asking this question seriously." He was "genuinely mystified and curious." He was "really looking forward to reading (y)our responses."

Really? Really looking forward? As Alexandra Petri pointed out in reaction,

"The only possible excuse for this sort of post would be if its author had never visited the Internet before and thought that Internet commenters were mythical creatures famed for their temperance, deep research and carefully modulated speech."

I would argue that sometimes comments on blog posts and articles do serve to elevate the conversation, but, as Petri notes,

"You want a serious conversation, ask a serious question."

And Blodget's was not a serious question. Which is not to say that it should not ever be asked. Treated with nuance, this and other questions of its ilk can force us to confront hate and prejudice in uncomfortable, but ultimately productive ways. But asking anonymous readers to weigh in on why Hitler may have been compelled -- by hatred, mind you, and not by the myriad pathologies and psychoses that drive someone to literally seek global domination -- to kill six million Jews is not the way to pose this question.

In many ways, Blodget got it right. Provocative headline that poses a question? Check. Bite-size, digestible sentences? Check. Photo of a sultry starlet? Check check. Asking readers to weigh in? Triple check, that was the point of the post. If clicks and page-views are the currency of the web, this template is online media's bread and butter. And maybe Blodget really did think that this was a way to foster discussion. He quickly issued an apology (which serves as an introduction to his original post,) and says that he "now regrets writing [the post]" while still noting that he "was praised for starting a discussion on a topic that a lot of people won't talk about." I'm sure he was. And maybe one reader took the time to read the 100+ comments that this post generated and, upon reaching the end, finally understood why some people hate Jews and could at last sleep easy. Maybe, but probably not.

This post and others like it don't encourage dialogue. They appeal to our baser instincts, and they bank on readers' visceral reactions. They assume a fundamental lack of insight, and that readers will buy into the notion that the quantity of reactions outweighs their quality, and that any forum is the right one for any type of discussion. Blodget assumes that we can no longer tell the difference between a thoughtful provocation and a thoughtless one. On this point, I think he got it wrong.

Monti wants Italian football halted for 2-3 years

By VICTOR SIMPSON

updated 11:22 a.m. ET May 29, 2012

ROME (AP) -Premier Mario Monti suggested Tuesday that Italian football should be suspended for two to three years after the latest match-fixing scandal rocked the national team and tarnished the image of the domestic game yet again just a week before the start of the European Championship.

Dawn raids on Monday resulted in 14 arrests - including Lazio captain Stefano Mauri - to bring the total number of suspects arrested in the match-fixing probe to about 50 since last year. Many more have been placed under investigation.

"Football should be stopped for two to three years," Monti said on Tuesday in a powerful message to Italy's football authorities on the need to clean up the game. "It is not a proposal by the government but a question I am asking as someone who was passionate when football was still football."

Monti made the comments while standing beside the prime minister of Poland, which is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine starting June 8.

"I'm not making a proposal, and even less is it a proposal that comes from the government, but it's a desire that sometimes I feel inside me: that it would really benefit the maturity of us Italian citizens if this game was completely suspended for two to three years," he said.

He also ruled out the use of public money to bail out football teams in difficulty.

Police swept through the Italian national squad's training camp near Florence on Monday as part of the operation and Italy defender Domenico Criscito was left out of the Euro 2012 squad after he was placed under investigation.

Antonio Conte, who coached Juventus to the Serie A title this term, was also officially notified that he is under investigation for alleged wrongdoing while in charge of Siena in 2010-2011.

Apart from those arrested Monday, three people have been placed under house arrest and two others are to present themselves to authorities. Five of the arrests were made in Hungary.

Numerous others have had their houses searched, including Chievo Verona striker Sergio Pellissier as well as Conte and Criscito.

The investigation was started by judicial authorities in Cremona last year. It has resulted in former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni being banned from football for three and a half years, and the arrest of former Lazio captain Giuseppe Signori.

Serie A clubs Atalanta, Novara and Siena were among the 22 Italian teams notified at the beginning of this month that they are being investigated by sports authorities.

Prosecutors in Cremona have detailed an extensive match-fixing ring stretching as far as Singapore and South America that was allegedly in operation for more than 10 years.

Italy has only recently recovered from the 2006 match-fixing scandal - known as Calciopoli - that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B for a season, plus points penalties for several other Serie A teams and lengthy bans for club and refereeing officials.

The Italian national team reacted in the best possible way, winning the World Cup later that year.

Oil/Gas Prosperity Comes To Eagle Ford Texas

From the Dallas Federal Reserve report ?Oil Boom in Eagle Ford Shale Brings New Wealth to South Texas?:

?Oil and natural gas activity is booming again in South Texas. The 2008 discovery of the Eagle Ford Shale play has breathed new life into industry in the region, where many mature and declining fields have operated for more than 40 years. Perhaps the largest discovery of new oil reserves in the United States since Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, in 1968, the Eagle Ford Shale extends over 23 South Texas counties (see map above).

Its southern edge begins near Laredo and trends northeast toward Austin, producing large quantities of natural gas. The northern edge?the formation is about 50 miles wide?follows a similar trend but produces oil. A central zone is rich in condensates, also called natural gas liquids, valuable to the refining and petrochemical industry on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The race to exploit these new South Texas reserves began in late 2008 and is primarily the result of recent advances that unlocked the secret of extracting natural gas and oil from shale. This new technology?along with favorable prices, existing infrastructure and ready access to the Gulf Coast refining and petrochemical complex?created the Eagle Ford Shale boom. Rapid oilfield development has brought new jobs, rising income and growing wealth to this historically low-wage, low-income area.

The Eagle Ford?s scale and speed of development proved so robust that they quickly overwhelmed previous efforts to comprehensively measure the economic impact. Recent data suggest that the oil boom?s impact on jobs, income and spending in the region has been profound.

Surging drilling activity has brought strong employment and wage growth to most of the counties in the Eagle Ford. Counties located above oil and condensate deposits, such as Dimmit, La Salle and McMullen, have experienced the greatest increase in employment and average weekly wages. Job growth was strong from 2005 to 2008, likely fueled by rising natural gas prices even before the Eagle Ford Shale play began (see bottom chart above).

Jobs in the region sank with the recession amid sharply dropping energy prices in 2009. From a low during first quarter 2010 to third quarter 2011, jobs grew at an annual rate of 5.9 percent, reaching 2.9 percent above the previous peak value. By comparison, during the same period, jobs statewide increased 2.4 percent and remained 0.01 percent below the previous high.

Generally, Eagle Ford counties represent about 2 percent of all Texas jobs. Since the beginning of 2010, the 15,773 net new jobs account for 6.9 percent of the state?s net gain during the period. While recent activity is impressive, more growth may lie ahead to meet demand. The scale of development has surpassed the capacity of local industry. Hotels, restaurants and gasoline stations are jammed with outside managers, crews and technicians. As the Eagle Ford matures and the local service industry expands, many outside workers may become local residents and employees.

Average weekly wages have grown markedly in most Eagle Ford counties.? For the 23 counties, the average annualized growth rate in the weekly wage during this period was 14.6%. By comparison, average weekly wages rose 6.8% in Texas, from $875 to $966, and 6.3% in the U.S., from $870 to $953. Given the strong growth in employment and average weekly wages in the Eagle Ford, seasonally adjusted total wages paid in its top five counties increased at an annual rate of 63.4% during this period, while the entire 23-county area saw a 25% increase.?

Father must pay Westboro Baptist Church $16,500

Spring Garden resident Albert Snyder got a bill for $16,500 on Friday -- the latest result of his ongoing legal battle with the Westboro Baptist Church.

Church members are seeking to recoup costs from federal appeals court, which dismissed Snyder's lawsuit against them. Snyder's lawyer, Sean Summers, said the court declared last week that Snyder was responsible for the costs, which were for copying and processing fees.

Efforts to reach an official from Westboro Baptist Church were unsuccessful Monday.

Such mandated reimbursements are common after appellate court cases, Summers said.

When the U.S. Supreme Court hears Snyder's case in the fall, its decision will ultimately make a big difference as to whether or not Snyder can eventually recoup that money, Summers said.

"It's rubbing salt in an open wound," Summers said.

The Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, led by Rev. Fred Phelps, preaches an anti-homosexual message. Members maintain that combat deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan are God's retribution for America's tolerance of gay men and lesbian women.

Church members have promoted that agenda with a series of intentionally provocative demonstrations outside funerals of servicemen and women who were killed in combat, during which they chant and hold signs bearing messages such as "Thank God For Dead Soldiers."

Church members staged such a protest outside the funeral for Snyder's son, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, in Westminster, Md. Snyder's son was killed in Iraq in 2006 when his Humvee overturned.

Snyder sued the protesters, and a Baltimore jury awarded him $5 million in damages for invasion of privacy and emotional distress. But the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned that decision on First Amendment grounds in September 2009.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the case.

Philadelphia lawyer Howard Bashman, an expert in appellate law, said that the loser in appellate court cases typically compensate the winner for court costs. Those costs tend to be higher when the plaintiffs win, because they must supply a complete copy of the original court case.

The winners may decide not to go after that compensation, frequently because the legal costs involved in pursing the funds would be more than the money they could recoup, Bashman said.

Funding the fund

Local lawyer Sean Summers said the federal appellate court rejected arguments that Albert Snyder should not be assessed $16,500 in legal fees because he doesn't have the means to pay them.

A fund has been set up to help Snyder pay the court costs. None of the money will go to attorneys, who are representing him pro bono. To contribute, go to www.matthewsnyder.org. Or send a check payable to "Al Snyder Fund" to the following address:

Pakistani Bishop Decries Theft of Church Land

LAHORE, Pakistan, MAY 25, 2012 (Zenit.org).- A Pakistani bishop is decrying the government take-over of Church-owned land, and the destruction of properties -- including a homeless shelter -- at the site.

The center was confiscated and razed in January, Aid to the Church in Need reported.

Bishop Sebastian Francis Shaw, apostolic administrator of Lahore Archdiocese, said that the land where the center stood still had not been returned ? despite promises from the provincial government.

Talking to Aid to the Church in Need, Bishop Shaw said: ?It looks like empty promises. Even after a meeting with a government official who assured us of an immediate return, nothing happened.?

The centre in Lahore?s Garhi Shahu district housed a day centre for the elderly, a sewing school for girls and other projects run by the Church ? as well as a chapel.

Bishop Shaw said: ?If the provincial government restores the property to us, they won?t compensate us for tearing down the building. We have to pay for the reconstruction ourselves ? this is unjust.?

The government has demanded that a Church-run school be built on the land ? as a precondition for its return ? and insisted this should be financed by the diocese.

Bishop Shaw said: ?It?s not impossible that this is just another method of delaying restitution, as the government may be hoping that we can?t fulfil this condition.

?As Christians, we?re an easy victim for the government, as they don?t have to fear any outbursts of violence.?

Romney?s Most Important Demographic

Mitt Romney?s visit to an inner-city, predominantly African-American West Philadelphia charter school Thursday looked like a curious move for his campaign, pitching his message of education reform.

The images of Romney were, at times, awkward, and he faced a far-from-friendly crowd inside and a crop of protesters outside.?But to understand the Romney campaign?s decision, look no further than the key demographic group he needs to win over to defeat President Obama: college-educated white voters, particularly women. (National Journal?s Ron Brownstein deems them Obama's??last line of defense.?)

Obama will win overwhelming numbers of African-American voters, even if their turnout level dips slightly from 2008.? But it?s the affluent suburban voter that?s most receptive to a campaign catering to diversity.?It?s why so many of the potential vice-presidential picks ? Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez ? don?t look like the Democratic stereotype of the white Republican male.?Brookings analyst Bill Galston told The Washington Post today: ?Suburban voters will be a real battleground, and upscale white voters like to think of themselves as tolerant and they won?t vote for a candidate that is seen as exclusionary, and the Romney folks must be aware of that.?

Polls currently show Obama in very poor shape with working-class whites, performing well with minority voters, and with college-educated whites in the middle. The white, upscale professionals are very winnable for Romney, but they still haven?t broken from Obama.?The Romney campaign believes that the main way to win them over is to contrast Obama?s post-partisan promise with the economic reality of 2012.?But also expect Romney to appeal to them by making a play for minority voters that the Republican party has often overlooked, through policies like school choice (and, in all likelihood, a far different tone on immigration than he showed in the primaries).

Romney will not win the support of most minority voters, but by pitching a message that doesn?t rule them out, he could end up winning the demographic group that matters most.

NATIONAL JOURNAL?S PRIMARY REPORT

Romney Slow to Engage in the Battle For the Hispanic Vote
[National Journal, 5/25/12] So far, Obama is crushing Romney in the battle over the Hispanic vote: The president has invested $1 million in Spanish-language media over the last five weeks, while Romney has spent only $13,000 since he clinched the nomination. And while Obama?s ads are specifically targeted to a Hispanic audience, Romney?s are exactly the same as his ads in English ? just translated into Spanish.

Obama vs. Romney: How Big a Government?
[National Journal, 5/24/12] Few issues illuminate the presidential candidates? wildly divergent views on the appropriate size and role of the federal government more than taxes, spending, and the deficit. National Journal?s Nancy Cook explores how Romney and Obama differ on fiscal policy.

Romney Holds Key Advantage Among Financially Struggling White Voters
[Washington Post, 5/25/12] The newest Washington Post/ABC News polls shows Romney holding significant advantages over Obama among white voters who are struggling financially and buffeted by job loss. In an election year in which the economy ranks as America?s top concern, this margin could mean disaster for the president.

Rejected Ideas From Romney?s ?Day One? Ad
[Funny or Die, 5/24/12] Funny or Die has some fun with Romney?s first commercials of the general election campaign. From ?Pin Joe Biden to the ground, shave his fruity haircut,? to ?Avoid saying ?I don?t feel feelings?? here are some lines that didn?t make the cut.

Are Romney and Obama Competing for the Austerity Prize??NEW!
[TPM, 5/25/12] Obama, Romney, and their surrogates on Capitol Hill are locked in a battle over which candidate and which party will more quickly and effectively reduce the deficit ? the opposite of what economists say we need.

Obama?s Checklist
[National Journal, 5/24/12] For each group central to his electoral coalition, Obama has either instigated or escalated conflicts with the GOP on symbolically powerful wedge issues. But National Journal?s Ron Brownstein writes that the president also needs to lay out a second-term agenda.

Unleash Biden!
[National Review, 5/25/12] Rich Lowry writes that an over-the-top VP with little regard for nuance or truth makes him the ideal attack dog ? but the worst possible surrogate.

Column: Romney?s Moment
[Wall Street Journal, 5/24/12] In an interview with WSJ?s Peggy Noonan, Romney opens up about the difference between the Romney in 2008 and the Romney now, his routine before rallies and town halls, and his iPad.

Obama Stumbles Out of the Gate
[Politico, 5/25/12] Since Obama officially launched his re-election campaign three weeks ago, the president, not Romney, is the one with the muddled message ? and the one who often comes across as badly political. Most surprisingly, the president is also the one falling behind in fundraising.

Obama?s Rush to Define Romney
[National Journal, 5/24/12] Let?s face it: Obama is the guy we want to have a beer with. But being a regular guy doesn?t win elections in an economy as stubbornly resistant to recovery as this one seems to be ? or does it? National Journal?s Jackie Koszczuk weighs in.

Romney?s Quiet Campaign For African-American Votes
[Washington Post, 5/24/12] Romney?s camp has been quietly laying the groundwork for an outreach effort to Obama?s most loyal supporters, black voters. But that plan clashed with political realities on the ground in West Philadelphia on Thursday.

Obama Campaign Gets Wise to GOP Twitter Tricks?
[National Journal, 5/24/12] Obama announced a seemingly-impromptu Twitter Q&A on Thursday night that actually turned out to be carefully planned, but the last-minute announcement allowed Obama to avoid Republicans taking over the conversation on social media.

Obama's Last Line of Defense?
[National Journal, 5/24/12] As Ron Brownstein writes, Obama's support among socially-liberal, upscale white women, as well as minorities, could cushion him against a large loss among all other white voters.

DETROIT Black prostate cancer patients may not be getting the same quality of care as white patients, according to a first-of-its-kind study by researchers at Henry Ford Hospital who found racial disparities in the results of surgery to remove diseased prostates.

While it is possible that anatomical differences or tumor characteristics may explain why the results of radical prostatectomy are not as good for African Americans as for white patients undergoing the same procedure, the study concluded that "surgeons, administrators and policymakers need to implement measures to address these disparities."

The new research findings, based on population samples from throughout the U.S., will be presented this week at the American Urological Association's Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

Quoc-Dien Trinh, M.D., a Fellow at Henry Ford Hospital's Vattikuti Urology Institute and lead author of the study, says that while no one before has reported racial disparities in the results of cancer surgery, earlier studies have found similar differences in other areas of medical treatment and care.

"Again, research raises a serious issue in the difference between Caucasian and African American patients, and we're trying to understand why it is happening," Dr. Trinh says.

"Is it a biological issue? African American patients might present with worse disease, therefore surgery and treatment are more difficult. For some cancers, like pancreatic, if you have worse disease, the surgery is harder. But that's doubtful with prostate cancer. It shouldn't be the case."

Dr. Trinh also notes that it is possible that African American patients have an anatomical difference the form of their pelvis that makes their surgeries harder, and there are studies to support that. "It's not controversial, just related to bone structure. And it might, big question mark, might make surgery harder," he says.

"But if it's not anatomy or a disease aggressiveness issue then why do Caucasians have a better outcome than African American patients? While this study does not go into those specific issues, it raises the question."

Using the most recent available data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS), Dr. Trinh and his fellow researchers identified 7,408 African American and 51,319 white prostate cancer patients who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP) between 2001 and 2007. In RP, the entire cancerous prostate and some surrounding tissue are surgically removed.

They then compared the surgery's immediate and short-term outcome, according to race, in five areas: rates of blood transfusions, complications during and after surgery, prolonged hospital stay, and in-hospital death. They found that compared to their white counterparts, African American patients had:

  • Significantly higher rates of blood transfusions, 9 percent compared to 6 percent
  • More complications during surgery, 1.7 percent compared to 1.3 percent
  • Higher rates of overall complications after surgery, 13 percent vs. 10.3 percent
  • Longer hospital stays (more than the median 3 days), 28.7 percent vs. 20.9 percent
  • No differences for in-hospital mortality rates

Trinh says because of limitations on available data, there is no way to know exactly why these disparities exist yet. "Is it physician and patient interaction, types of insurance, how these patients are perceived? It's hard to know," he says.

"I'd say that it's a little bit of everything worse disease, presentation, anatomy that makes surgery harder. But it's also a question of quality of care for ethnic minorities, especially in the American health care system. And that needs to be raised."
