The Mog Log: Consoles and the online Final Fantasy | Massively

You could be forgiven for losing faith in the prospect of Final Fantasy XIV ever coming out for the PlayStation 3. Yes, it had been a promised platform, but it wouldn't be the first MMO to abandon console promises. Heck, the development team is still working on fulfilling some of the promises made by the original team; it could be forgiven for putting that one on the back burner.

But it's a real thing. We've seen the screenshots, and we know that two years after the game's initial launch, we will finally get to play around in Eorzea on our televisions. (The "we" in this case refers to fellow PS3 owners.) This is sort of a mixed blessing.

This isn't a column about console gaming compared to PC gaming; I really don't care which platform you prefer, and it's also not the point. This is a column about the fact that Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XIV are both going to be console games as well as computer games, and that introduces some interesting wrinkles.

This is what I'm basing the number on, if you're wondering.Interface woes

I've mentioned in the past how Final Fantasy XI has suffered in no small part because it's tied to the PlayStation 2. This isn't because the PlayStation 2 is a bad console, nor is it because you can't upgrade the hardware in a PS2 without bringing it out of designer specifications. No, a lot of that weakness is because of the limitations to what you can do with a console game, starting with the interface.

One of the complaints that many people had about FFXIV right from the start was that its interface seemed to assume you had a controller hooked up to your computer. I think it was just a case of an interface designed to serve both computer and console and succeeding at neither, but there was definitely an element of making sure that things were streamlined to the point that your controller could do all the work. Some tasks, like switching pages on your action bars, almost seem as if they'd be easier with a controller than a keyboard.

There's no real way around this. Yes, you can hook a keyboard up to a console or a controller up to a computer, but in the latter case, you're adding a third peripheral when your hands are designed to handle two at most. In the former case, you're adding an accessory to your console for use in an exceptionally small number of games, possibly just the one.

FFXI was designed from the start for play on consoles, which is part of the reason the game has menu-based combat and an inelegant control schematic. FFXIV clearly has caved to some of the ideas of more modern design, but therein lies part of the problem. A glance at the interface screenshots suggests you've got about 16 action buttons on speed-dial. That means that fights have to be designed around playing with 16 abilities on tap because otherwise console players literally won't be able to compete.

You can say that it doesn't affect you on the PC, but part of the reason FFXIV was designed that way was to ensure that console and PC players were on equal footing for using abilities.

Then you've got issues like modifiable interfaces (a plus, but difficult on a console and yet expected if it's in the PC version) and display issues (televisions don't have the resolution of a good monitor, even HD ones), and just playing the game on two systems concurrently becomes a hassle. A manageable one, yes, but one that requires at least twice as much testing. Every update for FFXI has to work on three completely separate systems, and that adds more steps to the testing process and more failure points into an already complex system.

A new order

Introducing the console to the FFXIV playerbase is going to bring some development issues. But it also has at least one major benefit for the game as a whole: making the relaunch stick.

I've talked for a while about how FFXIV needs to win the hearts and minds of many people who have sworn off the game for good. There are a lot of people who have never played the game, but the title is still synonymous with all manner of negative adjectives. It takes some sort of external force to counteract that, something like the launch of the game on a new platform with a whole lot of new and pretty-looking screenshots. You know, the sort of relaunch that really crystalizes the idea that this is a completely new game.

Right now, fantasy games of the sprawling baroque style have a bit of traction with the console audience. And while there are other MMOs available for the PlayStation 3, they're currently all rather niche titles that don't have the brand name visibility of a new Final Fantasy game. Even though the console version alone won't repopulate the game, it will bring in new people, including those who had never paid much attention to it prior to the launch on the console.

That may mean driving more development toward appealing to console players, which means a trend toward more flexible gameplay, but I don't consider that a bad thing. And it's going to mean that there will be a lot of extra hurdles for the development team to jump through with the addition of the new platform, but that was always going to be the case.

As always, feedback is welcome in the comments down below or via mail to eliot@massively.com. Next week, I'm going to poke a bit at the servers being turned back on after the final database copy and what might be worth doing in the game's unsaved period as we approach the deadline.

From Eorzea to Vana'diel, there is a constant: the moogles. And for analysis and opinions about the online portions of the Final Fantasy series, there is also a constant: The Mog Log. Longtime series fan Eliot Lefebvre serves up a new installment of the log every Saturday, covering almost anything related to Square-Enix's vibrant online worlds.

Why Younger Workers Are Being Locked Out of Jobs - US Business ...

A surge in older workers has masked the severity of unemployment as the younger jobless find it increasingly more difficult to get back in the labor force, according to research from a prominent Wall Street economist.

Winston Davidian | Photodisc | Getty Images

Citigroup's Steven C. Wieting's work also throws doubt on a key assertion that some of his counterparts have used to explain a 31-year low in the labor force participation rate ? namely that the number has plunged because America is getting older.

Instead, the participation rate from the 55-and-older crowd actually has increased 6.8 percent since the job market began its slide in 2007, while the decrease has come mainly from teenagers and those between ages 35 and 54.

"The rise in labor force participation among 65+ workers is a clear supply positive for the U.S. economy," Wieting said in a research note. "But we are concerned with the long-term social costs of structural unemployment for younger cohorts given their potential failure to build private savings for retirement."

The national unemployment rate slipped to 8.1 percent in August, but mostly because the participation rate ? those either working or looking for jobs ? hit its lowest mark since September 1981.

Since the March 2007 peak in total employment, the economy has lost a net of 4.5 million jobs, a total that includes the 4.1 million positions President Obama often points to as being created since December 2009.

But excluding the 4.4 million jobs that have gone to workers 55 and over since 2007 ? 1.4 million to the over-65 group alone ? the economy has lost 8.9 million jobs, marking a total 7.4 percent decline.

Looking at job losses of younger workers is important, Wieting said, because they are the ones whose taxes are expected to pay for government programs designed to benefit the elderly.

With long-term unemployment near historic highs, the younger unemployed are finding it tougher to re-enter the workforce as their skill sets fall behind and their professional contacts diminish, a condition known as "hysterisis."

"To be sure, we count the unusually strong and increasing labor force participation of older workers as an absolute positive for the U.S. economy," Wieting said. "But the failure of mid-career aged workers to find employment might drive unexpected long-term social costs."

The findings also are consistent with the types of jobs being created during the recovery.

Lower-wage positions (paying $7.69 to $13.83 an hour) accounted for just 21 percent of the job losses during the recession but are 58 percent of the new jobs created. At the same time, mid-wage positions (paying $13.84 to $21.13 an hour) were 60 percent of the recession losses but only 22 percent of those during the recovery, according to the National Employment Law Project.

Wieting said government fiscal policies should focus closely on dealing with the hysterisis phenomenon.

"We reemphasize that long-term fiscal stability depends importantly on affordable entitlement programs. But relatively full employment is also a requisite," he said. "Employment, income and wealth trends should suggest new fiscal stabilization efforts should be very broadly shared amid a critical need for near-term employment recovery."

(AP) ? An elite Indonesian anti-terror squad has arrested 10 Islamic militants and seized a dozen homemade bombs from a group suspected of planning suicide attacks against security forces and the government, police said Sunday.

Eight suspects were arrested Saturday in Central Java's Solo town and a ninth in West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo, national police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said. He said a 10th suspect, Joko Parkit, was arrested Sunday in Solo.

Parkit's brother, Eko Joko Supriyanto, was shot to death by police in 2009 during raids seeking Southeast Asia's most wanted Islamist militant, Noordin M. Top. Noordin was killed by police a year later.

Amar said two of those arrested, Badri Hartono and Rudi Kurnia Putra, worked to recruit young men and taught at least one member of the group how to make bombs.

"They were the central figures of the group who had planned several terror attacks," Amar said. "They recruited, invited young men to be trained in a military-style jihadi camp and bought bomb-making materials."

He said the group planned to bomb the country's Parliament, shoot police and attack members of the anti-terrorism squad as part of a plan to establish Islamic Sharia law in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation.

Police seized 12 homemade bombs along with other partially assembled bombs, three rifles, four swords and several jihadist books.

Solo is the hometown of convicted radical cleric Abu Bakar Bashir. Police are investigating possible links between the unnamed group and other terrorism networks, Amar said. Authorities believe it has now been largely broken up, but are continuing to search for other members.

Since March, more than 30 militant suspects have been arrested and seven others killed in a series of raids in Indonesia. All of the suspects are believed to have been plotting domestic attacks, and some attended a military-style training camp in Poso on Sulawesi island.

Another member of the group, alleged bomb maker Muhammad Toriq, surrendered two weeks ago in Jakarta while carrying a gun and wearing a suicide bomber belt that did not contain any explosives. A second militant, Yusuf Rizaldi, gave himself up to police in North Sumatra three days later. Both provided information that led to the arrests of other members of the group in Saturday's raids, Amar said.

Indonesia, a secular nation, has been battling terrorists since 2002, when militants linked to the Southeast Asian network Jemaah Islamiyah began attacking Western nightclubs, restaurants and embassies. More than 260 people have been killed in the attacks, many of them foreign tourists.

Recent terror attacks in Indonesia have been carried out by individuals or small groups and have targeted local "infidels" instead of Westerners, with less deadly results.

Appraiser refuses to finish appraisal, says land is ... - Zillow Real ...

Your lender is refusing to switch to a conventional loan? You may need another lender to take a look to see if there is another option. If the house will not go FHA due to the crawl space issue, that will limit your pool of buyers in some areas when you go to sell, but if you like the house it should not be a deal killer alone

Personally, I would not rent the place instead of exploring your options to buy. If you cannot get the financing issue handled, then you may need to find another house, but I would not give up quite yet. Many of the Zillow lenders post most Mon-Fri business hours. I would repost this question in the mortgage section Monday morn with a heading like "What do I do now? FHA refused house, can I switch to conventional?" They are smart and helpful and may be able to get you on the right track.

Former San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock Calls Chris Matthews a Liar to His Face

Roger Hedgecock, the former San Diego mayor turned conservative talk radio host, called MSNBC's Chris Matthews a liar to his face Friday evening.

This resulted in quite a heated exchange between the two on HBO's Real Time (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS: The big lie is that the people who make a lot of money were the only ones who worked hard. You go to D.C. ? I say this a million times, I?m going to keep saying it to the people out there with a little racial problem - I say, ?Look, go to D.C. at 6:30 in the morning and drive around the tough neighborhoods. Everybody is waiting in line to go to the bus." You know where they?re going? They?re not going to get a welfare check. They're going to work. They?re going to work at 6:30 in the morning. It?s packed with people filling the buses going to work. And the idea that somehow the people that don't have a lot of money are lazy, where do you get that from? There?s a lot of people like your crowd that inherited everything. They were born sliding into home, and they take credit for it. You know that Romney gets away with this stuff all the time.

HEDGECOCK: Chris, Chris, calm down, man. You're just, you?re lying. I mean, come on.

MATTHEWS: It?s tonal.

HEDGECOCK: You guys and all this slander.

MATTHEWS: No, because I think there's a gentleman's agreement out there about covering up this racial game that your side has been playing this whole campaign about welfare?

HEDGECOCK: Oh, we're racist and we?re?

MATTHEWS: No, the advertising campaign is.

HEDGECOCK: You're just outrageously wrong, okay?

MATTHEWS: Why do you run the ads then? Why do you talk about welfare? Why does Newt talks about a food stamp president? Why do you keep going back to this old stuff again, this old dog-whistle stuff? Why do you keep doing it?

HEDGECOCK: The concern we have is just what Rana said. There has to be more social mobility. I come from a very poor background. I worked my way up and a lot of people have and were proud of it, and we don't want to see that taken away by government and handed out to programs that create more dependency, because food stamps are 72 percent more than when he took office.

Listen to Matthews? pathetic response:

MATTHEWS: Barack Obama is a poster child for what America stands for. He starts from a mixed family, he grows up, his father splits, he makes it, he goes to the best schools, becomes head of the Harvard Law Review, doesn?t go out and money grab, does everything right, cleanest record in the world, and you guys have a problem with this guy.

BILL MAHER: Wait, you said what a lot of Republicans say?

MATTHEWS: You know something? You don't like Obama.

HEDGECOCK: I don't like his policies.

MATTHEWS: No, you don?t like Obama.

HEDGECOCK: No, no, no, no, you're outrageously wrong.

MATTHEWS: Mitch McConnell was against him the first day he was in office.

HEDGECOCK: That?s wrong, it?s just wrong.

MATTHEWS: He said, ?My number one goal is to get rid of this guy.?

Show your friends and neighbors what you think of the liberal media.

Buy a "Journalists for Obama" T-shirt to let them know where you stand!

Donate to NewsBusters

Now watch something extraordinary as host Bill Maher - yeah, I said Bill Maher - plays the voice of reason:

MAHER: That's fake. You know what?

MATTHEWS: Fake? He's repeated it.

MAHER: I didn't want to get rid of Bush the first day?

MATTHEWS: Not from the first day, no matter what he did. No deals. No honeymoon. Nothing. Get rid of the bum.

MAHER: Yes because I knew he was a nincompoop from day one.

Story Continues Below Ad ?

For a change, Maher was right - not about Bush being a nincompoop but with regard to the left's decision from day one to want to get the 43rd president out of office.

This is how politics works, and people like Matthews conveniently forget it the second a Democrat wins the White House.

As an aside, this exchange took place about ten minutes after Matthews falsely claimed "unemployment was well past ten percent" when Bush left office.

Talk about your delicious instant karma.

The vast majority of Muslims have not taken to the streets over a film mocking the Prophet Muhammad, and behind the visible public anger a more measured debate is taking place over how much free speech is acceptable in the Muslim world. While many do yearn for more openness, few if any will go as far as accepting the right to blaspheme as the ultimate test of freedom of speech. (AP Photo/Muhammed Muheisen)

(AP) ? Images of angry mobs in Arab cities burning American flags and attacking U.S. diplomatic posts suggest the Muslim world is no less enraged at the United States than when President George W. Bush had to duck shoes hurled at him in Baghdad.

But more than three years after President Barack Obama declared in Cairo that he would seek "a new beginning" in U.S.-Muslim relations, a closer look reveals strides as well as setbacks.

One U.S.-led war is over and another is receding, although there are questions about whether America has made lasting gains in Afghanistan. The Arab Spring revolution, a spontaneous combustion that happened independent of Western influence, has given people new power and hope as well as democratic elections the U.S. supports.

But peace between Israel and the Palestinians is nowhere in sight, Iran is seen as a menace and broad mistrust with America is still deep and explosive across much of the Muslim world.

As nations across North Africa and the Middle East move chaotically toward democracy, they and Washington have settled into a wary, redefined relationship. Obama is not ready to call Mohammad Morsi, the popularly elected Egyptian president, an ally, and the democratically elected Iraqi president, Nouri al-Maliki, has dismissed U.S. demands that he stop Iran from using Iraqi airspace to fly weapons to Syria for use against anti-government rebels.

Such is the complicated progress report that Obama carries toward the United Nations General Assembly next week, his final moment on a world stage before the U.S. election on Nov. 6. For that election, Pew Research Center polling shows Obama has a clear edge over Republican Mitt Romney in handling foreign policy in general and problems in the Middle East specifically.

Across the world his standing remains markedly lower in predominantly Muslim nations. However, Leila Hilal, a Mideast expert at the New America Foundation, said Obama may have made more progress toward improving relations than critics say.

"Obama inherited a very damaged U.S. credibility in the region," she said, and so it would be unrealistic to think that his "new beginning" would take hold fast.

"There's only so much one president can do, given the history" of perceived insults by the U.S., she said. Those range all the way from the American invasion of Iraq to, more recently, the privately made anti-Islam video that ridicules the prophet Muhammad and triggered major protests across the Muslim world.

The question of the Obama administration's relationship with that Muslim world came under new election-year scrutiny when four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed in a Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Obama found himself eulogizing the dead, pledging that the work of U.S. diplomacy would go on undaunted ? and prodding his Muslim partners to accept responsibilities.

"As they emerge into new forms of government, part of what they're going to have to do is to recognize that democracy is not just casting a ballot," Obama said this week. "It's respecting freedom of speech and tolerating people with different points of view."

Obama's critics say he misunderstands the nature of the threat to moderation in the Mideast. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said the White House is demonstrating this by overstating the role of the anti-Islam video in igniting the violence that killed Stevens in Benghazi.

"It has nothing to do with videos. It has everything to do with Islamists trying to hijack these revolutions in places like Libya," McCain, Obama's 2008 challenger, said Wednesday. "And it shows the abysmal ignorance of this administration of what's really going on in the Middle East."

Abdeslam Maghraoui, the director of undergraduate studies in Duke University's political science department, says the protests that have erupted in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Yemen and in other Arab countries had more to do with local conditions than with U.S. policies. "The current anti-American backlash in the region is the byproduct of genuine misunderstanding, real ignorance and political jockeying among Islamic groups," he said.

Obama warned from the start that it would be a long slog.

In his Cairo speech on June 4, 2009, Obama noted that it was a "time of tension" between the U.S. and Muslims around the world ? "tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate."

At the time, Egyptians had not yet ousted their authoritarian leader, Hosni Mubarak, a decades-long U.S. ally, and popular rebellions had not yet sprung up across the region.

"I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world, one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect," Obama declared.

Assessing such an enormous promise is hard to quantify.

"It's vital to keep in mind that how Obama is perceived by the average person in Egypt or Iraq or Pakistan is not going to be the same as the way he's perceived by the diplomats or the opposition party," said Kecia Ali, an Islamic studies expert at Boston University. "To assume that there is a Muslim world view or a Middle Eastern view or even an Egyptian view of Obama makes no sense at all. There's not even an American view of Obama."

Then how about actions and results?

He has been unable to gather an agreed international response to Syria, where an Arab Spring revolt has devolved into a civil war that has killed 23,000 people, and the U.S. is unwilling to go it alone there. Without lethal aid from the West, the Syrian rebels have begun to accept arms and other assistance from more extreme factions, possibly including terror groups. That leaves open the possibility that if the rebels succeed in ousting President Bashar Assad, the country could be run by factions sympathetic to extremists.

On other big issues that help define U.S.-Muslim relations ? Iran, the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and the Arab Spring ? the president has seen a combination of setback, stalemate and frustration.

Iran stands out as perhaps the most clear-cut failure. Early in his presidency Obama offered an open hand to Iran's leaders, hoping to negotiate limits on their nuclear program. He said in June 2009 that the nuclear standoff had reached a "decisive point," and that what was at stake was preventing a nuclear arms race in the Mideast.

But the Iranians gave him the cold shoulder, and after a series of inconclusive attempts at negotiations, they are thought to be progressing toward a nuclear weapons capability. As he nears the end of his term, Obama has little to show for his Iranian outreach beyond a strengthening of international sanctions and a chilled relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Israeli has complained publicly about U.S. inaction and has given Romney a warm welcome in his country.

Obama did, as promised, reduce the U.S. military's presence in Muslim countries by removing all troops from Iraq and beginning to wind down the war in Afghanistan. But relations with Pakistan are arguably worse.

Obama priorities have been not just to mend relations with the broader Muslim world but also to sharpen the focus of U.S. policy toward defeating al-Qaida through the use of less blunt instruments of military power. And in joining NATO allies and the Arab League to get rid of Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi, Obama succeeded without committing U.S. ground troops. But there are limits to the power of a U.S. president to shape relations with Muslim nations, even longstanding allies.

Steven A. Cook, a Mideast expert at the Council on Foreign Relations, says Washington has long tended to make political demands of Egypt and other Arab countries that they cannot reasonably be expected to meet.

"Americans consistently fail to recognize," he recently wrote, "that Arabs have their own politics and have the ability to calculate their own interests independently of what Washington demands."

Former ?MunchOnMe? Team, Launches Caviar, A Curated ?Seamless?

Screen Shot 2012-09-20 at 4.01.33 PMThe team behind the ridiculously named food daily deals site MunchOnMe is on to the next one, launching a new startup, Caviar after Munch On Me's acquisition. Caviar is?Seamless "done right" i.e. a platform that allows users to order food "seamlessly" via web. As of today, users in SF can sign up for access to the Caviar beta, which?differentiates itself from Seamless by only offering orders from restaurants that don't typically deliver. With its focus on curation, Caviar limits its inventory to restaurants that have four stars or higher on Yelp. "[With]?Seamless, you don't really need to use them to get the food. You can call the restaurant yourself and they'll take the order over the phone and deliver it to you," says founder Jason Wang, on why Caviar is a net value add in an already crowded space.

Obama better bet for US stocks? | Global Investing

The wealthy in the United States have a reputation for being firmly on the side of the Republican Party, but maybe they shouldn?t be for the November presidential election.

According to Tom Stevenson, investment director at asset manager Fidelity Worldwide Investments, past evidence points to Democrat Barack Obama as possibly the more lucrative bet for equity? investors.? He says:

Looking at stock market performance following the last 12 elections suggests that investors should, in the short term at least, be rooting for an Obama victory. History shows that markets tend to rally after a win for the incumbent party by more than 10% on average, but fall modestly if the challenger is successful.

The graphic below provides the comparitive returns after Democrat and Republican presidential election victories.

?

But there?s more.? U.S. Big Business? tends to support the Republican Party which supports lower taxes and less government involvement in the economy.? But Fidelity says this stance has not delivered stock market returns; in fact the S&P 500 has delivered an average annual return of over more than 10%? under the Democrats in the past half century, compared with around 5% under the Republicans, Fidelity says.

?

Online polls from Reuters/Ipsos last week? gave Obama a 7 percent lead over Romney, 48 percent to 41 percent among likely voters. Fidelity says? the odds of Obama being re-elected are closely correlated with the performance and level of the S&P500. Obama supporters (and maybe stock market investors) will be hoping the index, up 16 percent so far this year,? holds up until Election Day.

Tim Southee and Rob Nicol declared fit for World T20 opener - Cricket News Update

New Zealand?s World T20 squad was today boosted by the news that fast bowler Tim Southee and batsman Rob Nicol have both recovered from the stomach bug and are fit to play in their World T20 opener against Bangladesh, at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele, on Friday, September 21, 2012.

Southee was struck by a bout of gastroenteritis soon after arriving here in Colombo, last week. The illness had forced him to miss the World Cup practice match against formidable South Africa on Monday, which the Black Caps lost by nine runs.

The duo was on Tuesday confined to Colombo as the rest of the squad headed to Kandy ahead of their Group D fixture against the Bengali Tigers. The seamer was also admitted to a hospital in Colombo to undergo rehydration, making him a doubtful starter for Friday?s game.

Nicol experienced vomiting and was also kept under observation for sign of dehydration. However, the duo was declared fit to travel to Kandy on Wednesday morning.

"The players have shown good improvement," team spokesman Ellery Tappin told?AFP from the hill town. "They are currently travelling from Colombo to join the team in Kandy," the spokesman revealed further.

Former New Zealand skipper and the experienced all-rounder, Daniel Vettori had also suffered from a stomach bug, however he recovered sufficiently to travel to Kandy with the rest of the squad, on Tuesday.

?We're not the only team that's had a few issues over the last few days," said the New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson. "There's a fair bit of sickness floating around but nothing major. There's a variety of options of where it's come from so we're pretty diligent about things but you can't contain everything,? he added further.

The veteran all-rounder, who has come out of T20 retirement to play in the global tournament, is likely to miss the opening game against Bangladesh, however he should be back to hundred percent fitness for Sunday?s match against former champions Pakistan.

Hesson said that Vettori was struggling with low energy levels, but was confident about his full recovery before the Pakistan encounter.
