Duggars Share Photos of Baby Jubilee at Memorial Service

Devout Christian reality stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar hosted a memorial service Wednesday in tribute to the baby they lost in a second-trimester miscarriage last week. Named Jubilee Shalom Duggar, the baby would have been the couple's 20th child.

Bowel disease sidelines Man U's Fletcher

After months of putting his health at risk while playing with a chronic bowel disease, Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has been forced take an extended break from football to rest and recuperate.

The 27-year-old Scotland captain, who did not play between March and September with what United previously called a "virus," has been suffering from ulcerative colitis ? an inflammatory bowel condition.

Fletcher was on the bench last Wednesday when the Premier League champions lost at FC Basel in the Champions League and last played on Nov. 22 against Benfica, scoring in the 2-2 draw.

"Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently," United said Tuesday on its website. "Darren's continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimizing his own health and fitness."

United said Tuesday that Fletcher has ulcerative colitis, a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. Symptoms can include diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood loss, weight loss and fatigue. There's no known cure for the disease.

"He has ... accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again," United said. "We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery."

Fletcher has played 10 times for United this season and made five appearances for Scotland.

"I am obviously absolutely devastated for Darren because I know how hard he has worked to get back to playing regularly for his club and country," Scotland coach Craig Levein said. "He is one of the most inspirational players I have had the pleasure of working with and on behalf of his Scotland teammates and my backroom staff I sincerely hope this time off, allied to the support of his family, will enable him to make a full recovery.

"He is a central part of our plans for the World Cup 2014 qualifiers but at this stage his health is paramount."

While Fletcher has never appeared at a major tournament for Scotland, he has won four league titles, the Champions League, an FA Cup and two League Cups since making his debut for United in 2003.

Fletcher signed a new four-year deal with United in March, keeping him at the club until 2015.

Fletcher's absence further limits United's midfield options entering the second half of the season. Brazil international Anderson has been ruled out until February because of a knee injury and Tom Cleverley is not expected to be back before Christmas because of an ankle problem.

United manager Alex Ferguson will instead be relying on Michael Carrick, Phil Jones and 38-year-old Ryan Giggs to take the central midfield slots.

United will also be without captain Nemanja Vidic for the rest of the season after rupturing the cruciate ligament in his right knee in Wednesday's 2-1 loss at Basel.

"We are going to miss 2 big players in Fletcher + Vidic, I hope they both come back fitter + stronger than ever," United defender Rio Ferdinand said on Twitter. "Believe."

Brain-heart link may explain sudden death in Rett syndrome

ScienceDaily (Dec. 14, 2011) ? Poets might scoff at the notion that heart and brain are closely related, but scientists led by those at Baylor College of Medicine say a genetic defect that affects the brain can stop a heart.

In a study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, BCM researchers and colleagues found that heart problems that occur in nearly 20 percent of children with Rett syndrome, a neurological disorder, originate because the Rett gene (MeCP2) is lost in nerve cells -- not in heart muscle cells.

"The finding in mice opens the door to tailoring treatments to prevent heart rhythm problems and even deaths in girls with the disorder," said Dr. Jeffrey Neul, associate professor of pediatrics at BCM, a researcher at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital and the assistant medical director of the Blue Bird Circle Rett Clinic.

Long QT syndrome

"We began by looking at mice whose symptoms closely mimicked that of Rett syndrome. We found that those mice also exhibited electrical malfunctions in the heart, known as long QT syndrome," said BCM collaborator Dr. Xander Wehrens, professor of molecular physiology and biophysics and the Juanita P. Quigley endowed chair in cardiology at BCM. Long QT syndrome describes an interval usually measured on an electrocardiogram or ECG. These electrical malfunctions cause that interval to be too long, which can lead to a dangerous heart beat that can cause sudden death in people.

"Long QT syndrome is found in nearly 20 percent of people with Rett syndrome," said Neul. Sudden death also occurs in a significant percentage of Rett patients, and Neul and his colleagues wondered if the two might be linked.

The gene MECP2 occurs in the genomes of every cell, providing a code for the protein associated with it, MeCP2. It can have different activities in different cells. In this study, researchers created a mouse in which MeCP2 was missing only in the brain and nervous system. Even though MeCP2 functioned normally in the heart, the heart beat abnormally.

Brain sends wrong message to heart

"We showed that the heart problems were actually secondary to nervous system deficits and that cardiac activity can be remolded by abnormalities in brain activity," said Neul. "Basically, the brain is sending the wrong message to the heart leading to the malfunction."

Taking a closer look at the heart cells affected by the nervous system deficits, researchers found an unusual persistent sodium current.

Sodium currents occur naturally in cell function. When there is cell activity, sodium travels in and out of the cell through a channel that acts like a window opening and closing. Unusual persistent sodium current means the "window" doesn't close properly, causing a slow trickle of sodium to flow through the channel for a longer period of time.

Seizure drug improves sodium problem

There are seizure medications that block this process, which also occurs in other neurological disorders. When Neul and his colleagues used an anti-seizure drug to treat these malfunctioning heart muscle cells in the lab, the sodium current problem improved. They then gave the common anti-seizure drug to the abnormal mice which corrected the heart rhythm problem and blocked sudden cardiac death.

The next step is to treat the animals long term, he said. At that same time, they plan to look at what is going on in children with Rett who are already taking these kinds of medicines to treat their seizures.

"Are the people on these drugs less likely to have long QT intervals?" he said, "More research in the lab will help us reassess what we are doing in the clinic and determine if we need to change our treatment methods," Neul said.

3D printer helps grow new bones

A 3D printer is being used to create "bone-like" material which researchers claim can be used to repair injuries.

The engineers say the substance can be added to damaged natural bone where it acts as a scaffold for new cells to grow.

It ultimately dissolves with "no apparent ill-effects", the team adds.

The researchers say doctors should be able to use the process to custom-order replacement bone tissue in a few years time.

Prof Susmita Bose helped carry out the work at Washington State University and co-authored a report in the Dental Materials journal.

"You can use the bone-like ceramic powder as a feed material and it can make whatever you draw on the computer," she says.

"It is mostly [suitable for] low load bearing applications. However, what we are trying to develop is the controlled degradation... of these scaffolds where as the scaffold dissolves in the body the bone tissue grows over it."

Binder

Prof Bose's team have spent four years developing the bone-like substance.

Their breakthrough came when they discovered a way to double the strength of the main ceramic powder - calcium phosphate - by adding silica and zinc oxide.

To create the scaffold shapes they customised a printer which had originally been designed to make three-dimensional metal objects.

It sprayed a plastic binder over the loose powder in layers half as thick as the width of a human hair.

The process was repeated layer by layer until completed, at which point the scaffold was dried, cleaned and then baked for two hours at 1250C (2282F).

Repairs

Tests carried on immature foetal bone cells in the laboratory found that new bone cells started growing over the scaffold within the first week of it being attached.

The team say they have also had promising results from tests involving live rabbits and rats.

"The way I envision it is that 10 to 20 years down the line, physicians and surgeons should be able to use these bone scaffolds along with some bone growth factors, whether it is for jaw bone fixation or spinal fusion fixation," says Dr Bose.

This is not the first time that orthopaedic experts have investigated the use of 3D printers.

Earlier this year a surgical trainee at Scotland's Monklands hospital detailed a technique to produce bone replicas using the technology.

Mark Frame suggested using a CAT scanner to produce images of damaged bones.

He said the data could then be fed into a 3D printer to create a model to help doctors plan their surgery.

He said the process cost about a tenth of traditional techniques.
